Pay & Benefits
Each April we see changes to statutory payments and may also see new employment legislation being introduced.  Here is what we know so far for April 2022

National Living and Minimum Wage rates

The new hourly rates effective from April 2022 are as follows:

Employee age / type  Hourly rate effective April 2022
Employees aged 23 and above (National Living Wage)          £9.50
21-22 years old  £9.18
18-20 years old  £6.83
16-17 years old  £4.81
Apprentice rate  £4.81

If you are a Living Wage Employer, details of the current rates can be found here.

Other statutory rates effective from 6th April 2022

  • Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) will increase to £99.35 per week
  • Statutory family friendly leave rates including maternity, paternity, adoption, shared parental, and parental bereavement leave will increase to £156.66 per week
  • The maximum week’s pay for calculating statutory redundancy pay will increase to £571

What else is changing?

COVID-19

From 1st April 2022 free testing will end; however, limited ongoing testing will be made available for some groups, including social care staff.

In April we expect further guidance from the Government setting out the ongoing steps that people with COVID-19 should take to minimise their contact with others

Don’t forget that from 24th March 2022 the COVID-19 provisions within Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) will cease.

Employment law

There are changes that we are still anticipating, but we don’t have full details or implementation dates yet. These include:

  • Right-to-work checks – The government introduced a digital scheme as a part of the response to COVID-19 and we anticipate this will become a permanent change at some point within the next year.
  • Flexible working – The government is considering the option to allow employees to request flexible working from day one of employment
